Wheee new toy!
Well my Icom W-32 came today from AES. (for the no nerd types thats a hand held ham radio). It was slow at work tonight so I had ample tim to play wiht it before comming home.. The menues are a bit strange but I'm getting used to em.
I will say one thing about electronics work while tired.. DON'T!
I decided to do the extended Tx mod on it.. being a bit tired I read "Remove three legged diode 543" as "Remove all three 3 legged diodes." Needless to say this really pissed the radio off. I would power on and xmit, but not tune to diffrent bands or allow for imput of freq's. Well I started freaking out a bit. I quick ran and got the sodering iron and soder in a hope to repair it.
It took nearly 45 minutes (and several test's) to correctly re-attach the two severed diodes back on to the board.. With work nerves and shaking hands I powered the radio on once more.. IT WORKED!
Had theses been micro resistors or simmilary nearly invisible compnents I would have a $300 door stop on my hands.
On a side note my sodering iron is a Weller WTCPT. It was a gift from Orca a few years back and I have gotten hundreds of hours of use out of it. I can confidently say it was the quality of this iron that made the precision repair possible. Thanks again Orca, I think about you every time I use it to this day :>
