Thoughs about Second Life. I posted this to the babyfurs group, but felt that since if was a very clear view on how I feel about Sl I would X post it here as well.
1. Frame rate. I don’t think I need to go into this. Even on a very nice gaming rig Sl still suffers brutal frame rates and is very laggy.
2. Poor coding. Yes I am aware that SL is mostly coded by a volunteer base, but however that does not excuse that every time there is a major patch it requires a second, third of complete revamp of that patch to fix what they broke.
3. Lack of content. As a long time MMORPG’er I’ve played several very good games and a few that have really sucked. Those that sucked usually lacked content. In my opinion if you don’t want to hang out chatting (Furcadia style), play bingo-tringo-slingo-whatevergo, or go site seeing there isn’t really much to do. There are no quests, no rewards, no goal, and no prize.
4. Make your own content. This is a direct tie in to the above point. If you do not posses the desire/skill to create objects in SL you had best have plenty of cash IRL so you can buy Lindens to acquire items in game, other wise have a paid account so you can buy items from those that can create.
5. My final point. No life; this is the expression I’ve heard many people use when referring to SL, and I really think it fits. As a recovered MMORPG addict I know what it is like to be obsessed with a game, it’s all you think about, all you do, and all your life is about; Very similar to drug addiction.
Many of the hardcore SL players I know have depression or reality issues. SL allows them to create a life where things are just the way they want them to be and everything is perfect. This is all good and well, and can even be helpful if taken in moderation, but very dangerous to personal growth and development if used as a crutch.
As with all my posts, these thoughts are entirely my own, if you do not agree with them and cannot provide counterpoints in a constrictive and mature fashion please do not bother replying.
